Sometimes the bugs in your landscaping can get out of control, chewing through your plants and ruining all of your beautiful work. Thankfully, there are a lot of things you can do to prevent and maintain a pest problem without ever having to turn to harmful pesticides. So, would you like to learn more about how you can take control of the pests in your landscaping? Let’s do it!
Pesticides can be harmful on so many levels.
Many pesticides are bad for your landscaping and for the environment in general. They’re also harmful to the “good bugs” that help your plants thrive. In fact, pesticides are the reason why the bee populations all over the world are struggling, so please avoid them when you can. There are much better methods of controlling pests without damaging the environment.
So, how can you control pests?
This largely depends on the kind of pest you are dealing with, so bear with us for a moment. If the pest is large enough to grab right off the leaf, then you can begin with the “hand-picking” method. If you’re squeamish about bugs, or simply don’t wish to pick them off your plants, then you can use a variety of natural bug repellants. One popular mixture uses a head of garlic, 1 tablespoon of dish soap (without bleach), 2 cups of water, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. All you need to do is deposit the cloves of garlic into a mixture of the water and vegetable oil after they have been finely pureed. Let this sit overnight, then add the dish soap in the morning. Throw it in a spray bottle and watch the pests disappear. Just make sure that there is no bleach in your dish soap or you could harm the plants. Just to make sure that everything is perfect, test your repellant on a small section of your landscaping before going all out. That way, if you misjudged anything, you will know that it needs to be remade.
