Illuminate Your Late Spring Nights with These Landscape Lighting Techniques!
Uplighting: The first technique to consider is Uplighting. With Uplighting, you can bring attention to the various natural elements of your landscape. Spotlight your trees, plants, or intriguing architectural designs. Uplighting is a more dramatic technique than its counterpart, downlighting. But with enough skill, you can make it look natural rather than artificial. For this technique, you’ll need directional lights and well lights. Be sure that your lights don’t get wet or are otherwise exposed to potential water damages, for instance, if they happen to fall into a pond.
Moon Lighting: The next technique you could consider is known as Moon Lighting. No, this does not mean you work a second job or live a secret second life. Instead, in landscaping terms, Moon Lighting is used to provide natural light over large areas, but at a low, soft setting instead of higher, harsher one. This technique can be used as a bridge between one lighting scene and the next. You won’t have any black holes of darkness in your overall landscape. You’ll only need tree lights, two lights per tree, to pull this one off, but be sure they are placed high enough (at least 25 feet in the air) and are not attached directly to the tree.
Cross Lighting: The final technique to consider for now is known as Cross Lighting. Under Cross Lighting, the textures and shapes of various landscaping surfaces are emphasized. Your hardscapes can also benefit from this lighting technique. Typically, a so-called “flattening effect” is a consequence of using only one light. That one light, usually a single front light, is complemented with a second light. With two lights (such as directional or well lights) working in unison, you can draw attention to certain points of interest.
