Located on Lake Maggiore and accessible by ferry from Stresa, a town in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola Province of Piedmont, Italy, Isola Madre – or “Mother Island,” – is brimming with historical botanical gardens that have been well-preserved since the early sixteenth century, when they were initially planned and planted.
Thriving along meandering dirt pathways that are populated by exotic bird varieties like pheasants, peacocks, and parrots, the gardens are regarded for their flourishing azaleas, multi-bloomed rhododendrons, delicate camellias, and ancient wisteria. Leading to a villa that houses a collection of marionettes, 17th century paintings, dolls, and porcelain, the gardens are a treasury of purples and pinks, punctuated by flourishing greenery.
Built by Count Lancillotto Borromeo in the 1500s, the island looks much the same as it did some 500 years ago. The island is open to the public during the warm season for perusal amidst the enchanting gardens that will transport visitors back in time.
At Lehnhoff’s, we love the look of gardens that feel secret, that are informal sanctuaries with the capacity to transport you to another time and place. Your landscape should be a means of escapism – a still getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily existence. We’d like to help you transform your outdoor space into just that: a restful retreat.
