What Vegetables Can I Plant in My Baltimore Garden?

vegetable gardenGardening can be a great pastime. It’s relaxing and you can get a really great sense of fulfilment when your vegetables come in and you realize that you can eat something that you’ve grown yourself. It’s empowering and exciting. Some vegetables grow better in Maryland than others, though. When you’re ready to get started growing your Baltimore vegetable garden, you should consider which vegetables that you like the best as well as which ones will grow the best for you. We’ve put a small list together of some of the best vegetables to grow right here in Baltimore!

  • Tomatoes – Fresh tomatoes have to be one of the best things to grow just about anywhere. They’re delicious and can grow pretty big if you take good care of them. You can grow tomatoes directly in the ground or in large pots – it really depends on what you have room for and how you prefer to grow your veggies. You can plant your seeds at just about any point in early spring and see them sprouting up by the first week or two of July! (Disclaimer: we know that a tomato is actually a fruit, but it works great in a vegetable garden J)
  • Beans – There are so many different types of beans to grow. It’s almost mind blowing the amount of options that you have when you decide to grow beans in your Baltimore vegetable garden. Since beans deposit nitrogen into the ground, they’ll also help your other vegetables grow. It’s a win-win situation. You can start growing beans as soon as the last frost is over and watch for them to mature every 60 days or so.
  • Leafy Greens – Greens such as kale and spinach have gained popularity recently because of the numerous health benefits that you can get from them. Lettuce and spinach grow especially well in Maryland because the can handle cool to cold weather. The other great part about growing these types of leafy greens is that you can grow them well into November, when most other vegetables are done growing. It’s easy to grow a steady supply through the summer and into the fall since you can harvest them once a month or so.
